The principles which underly good melodic writing are consistent, regardless of whether it's 12-tone or not. These principles are explored in this text book. It was used at North Texas in the composition class, maybe at UT Austin, too.

thanks for the positive feedback, Eddie & moderniST4alien. I used LOGIC to do it. But the backing track is ToneZappa's on those two guitar solos. I'm a guitar player mainly, and I play piano for fun.

As a scholar of the sciences, it is very difficult for me to not associate music with numerical patterns. Whether it's Bach, Mozart, Schoenberg, Stockhausen, Cage, Xenakis, or Haas... I cannot escape the inherent mathematical construction of each and every one of them.

Depending on what Kagel is your favorite... I have a feeling you will love Vinko Globokar.
Very interesting composer, he reminds me a bit of another avant-garde composer working with human.Voices to the extreme but I can't remember the name.

As a music listener/fan, I do lke serialism but as a composer it doesn't interest me. I haven't composed any "formula music" outside of 12 tone studies personally.

This guy has been veering on 2nd or 3rd favourite composer for quite a while and his music is starting to effect me philosophically, not just musically. His music seems to connect to ideas outside of music itself, as an absurdist he questions reality in many ways.

I've heard all of Mayhems classic albums but they never done a lot for me, personally.

I'm not familiar with a lot of black metal bands but it has appealed to me in small bites over the years, I got into music through progressive rock/metal initially.
I liked Darkthrone's Under a Funeral Moon album, Emperor's Anthems To the Welkin at Dusk (that one in particularly means a lot to me in general)

Yeah. Bathory is Swedish of course, but integral to the history of it all. I was a metalhead before I came to classical music, and black metal was really something special to me.
Burzum Darkthrone Emperor Gorgoroth Ildjarn Immortal Mayhem
Almost all of the above happened very quickly within a short period from about 1992 to 1996. Insane stuff.
